5 Ways to Choose Your Wedding Color Palette

rock n roll themed wedding invite

What is your theme?

First of all, you can pretty much make any color palette work for any theme, one way or another.  But it could be far more of a challenge that you realized to incorporate your black, red, and silver palette fit into your rustic wedding vibe.  Certain themes pair easier with some colors than others. Rustic weddings favor muted earth tones, vintage does beautifully with pale pastels, modern loves an infusion of bold colors.  Consider your theme when trying to decide on your palette.  If you really wanted a certain color in your wedding but it doesn’t go with your theme, try picking a different shade of that color or using it as a secondary element in your palette.

What time of year is your wedding?

Especially if you are located in an area that experiences all four seasons, the time of year can have an impact on how your wedding is perceived. Autumn leaves outside?  It might be a bit jarring to walk into a wedding with a juicy citrus, summery color palette.  Does this mean you can’t have a lime green and lemon yellow wedding in the middle of November?  Of course it doesn’t.  Go with the palette you love. But if you are having a hard time deciding, the calendar just might give you a hand in the selection process.  Traditionally, pastels are perfect for spring time, brights with summer, earth tones for autumn, and jewel tones for winter.

What type of venue have you booked?

Some venues are less of a blank slate than others.  That beautiful Vermont inn might just come with some very boldly-patterned wallpaper.  In these cases, it’s better to choose colors that play well with the surroundings than compete with them.  You don’t have to be matchy-matchy, just find complementary shades that will add to your venue’s ambiance.  And if you love the design choices made by your venue, absolutely embrace the colors and style around you.  It will help your wedding look perfectly staged.

What colors do you (and your friends) love to wear?

It might be harder to narrow down your wedding colors when looking at centerpieces, rather than clothing. But consider that your bridesmaids will be wearing the colors you select.  Find colors that flatter everyone’s complexion and then either alternate colors or shades to make sure everyone is wearing what they know looks best on them.  Don’t forget to think about what color you look best in. After all, even though you might be wearing white, your wedding will be drenched in this color–you should love it.

What wedding colors have taken over your Pinterest board?

You wouldn’t believe how many subconscious decisions we make when we go a little pin-crazy. I had a friend who said she loathed the color pink.  When I went through her boards, I mentioned how many pink images there were, she experienced a little bit of color denials.  “I just like the ideas. But I would want them in a different color,” she said.  But as I clicked through the seemingly 500th blush wedding dress, she had to admit that she clearly had a complicated relationship with pink.  Look at your boards (or better yet, have a friend look through them).  What are the commonalities in color?  Are you always selecting dark, sophisticated palettes?  Or ones with lots of bright and cherry colors?  If you see a trend emerging, you may have just found your wedding colors.

Tip of the Day: If you are choosing a DJ over a band, you should know that there is a great deal of difference from one DJ to the next.

"A great DJ will not only exhibit a high energy approach and love playing music for your crowd, but also takes the time to premix the songs that you love. While some DJs press buttons, others make sure the flow is seamless and keep your guests on the dance floor with uninterrupted fun and limited pauses," says Aviva Samuels, a wedding planner at Kiss the Planner.

Lined Envelopes for Wedding Invitations

silver chevron lined envelope

A lined envelope is just about my favorite stationery detail.  It gives a hint of pizazz, a little razzle-dazzle in a completely frivolous and fun way.  Lined invitation envelopes are perfect for weddings because they can give your guests a little extra hint towards the mood and color palette of your upcoming event.  Because so much information has to be shared on the actual invite, sometimes there isn’t quite enough room for all of your personality to shine through.  Lined envelopes take care of that dilemma.  Check out this fun collection of patterned, lined envelopes for wedding invitations that we have assembled!

When you want a metallic liner, it’s fun to also include a pattern. Above, a silver chevron gives this modern invitation a jaunty touch.  Below, this gold and black pattern on the envelope liner hints at an Art Deco affair.

Is white a big part of your metallic color palette? Gold, black, and white weddings are completely on-trend this year.  Leave plenty of white space in your liner pattern.  Both the hatch pattern (above) and the smattering of tiny hearts (below) keep the white space front and center, not overwhelming it with metallic glow.

Will travel be an element of your wedding’s theme? From destination weddings to honeymoon registries, globetrotting couples love to let their wanderlust show.  Line your envelopes with maps, such as with this gorgeous masculine invitation (above).  Or, if you happen to be traveling somewhere specific for your wedding or honeymoon, flaunt something local. The modern ikat pattern below would be ideal for a Southwestern event.

If bright or deep colors are in your wedding’s scheme, a liner is a great place for a pop of your fave hue. Below, the red and white polka dotted liner incorporates the pattern of the marquee lettering of the invitation’s font.

5 Relationship Tips For Couples Getting Married | Honeymoon

In the midst of wedding planning and the countless decisions that must be made, it can be easy to forget about the most important thing in your life: your relationship with your fiancé. Date night gets waylaid by DJ interviews, brunch gets bumped by florist visits and suddenly you realize that you haven’t spent quality time together in months. Here are a few ways to stay focused on each other before saying "I Do."

1. Make your relationship the number one priority.
It sounds trite, but explaining what you need and what is bothering you is an essential component of every relationship. If you’re feeling like all of the focus is on your wedding and not on your relationship, tell your fiancé. Let them know that you love them and spend an evening out that has nothing to do with your upcoming wedding. This gives him/her a heads up and the ability to fix the situation before it turns into an argument.

2. Blow off steam together.
Wedding planning can be stressful as you balance your dreams, your budget and both families' expectations. Instead of bickering, go do something to shake off the stress. Hit the gym, go on a hike, play a game of pick-up soccer or go to a comedy club and laugh together. The shared experience will strengthen your relationship, and the resulting endorphins will make you both feel better.

3. Share the load.
How you handle your wedding planning will affect how you face challenges in the future as a married couple. Is one of you doing the majority of planning and feeling overwhelmed? Don't be afraid to ask the other partner to take over some of the planning or step in and do more household chores until the load is more balanced. If that isn’t a favorable option, then you should consider hiring a coordinator to pitch in so that you can better enjoy your time as nearlyweds.

4. Do something sweet.
Think of all those details you’re incorporating into your wedding to make it more personal for guests; in the same vein, you should try to do something sweet for your fiancé on a weekly basis. Small gestures such as including a note in their lunch or surprising them with flowers on a Tuesday will not only express how much you love them, but also set the tone for a wonderful newlywed life together.

5. Keep the big picture in focus.
Your wedding is an important life event but it is only one day in the lifetime that you will spend together. Every time you start to feel overwhelmed, think about that fact. You've found the love of your life and you're going to pledge your commitment to one another in front of all your friends and relatives. This makes any minor detail pale in comparison!

Bryan and Lauren’s Elegant Lanai, HI Destination Wedding by Anna Kim Photography

groom kissing bride after wedding

This job of mine is single-handedly responsible for my rather large bucket list. And now, Bryan and Lauren’s wedding has added another item: Visit Lanai.  Okay, it really added two items. the second being: become a redhead.  Because, seriously, Lauren’s hair is just perfect.  The backdrop for this Hawaiian wedding is unbelievable–it looks like a whole other world. As this couple strolls through the hotel’s grounds and country fields it looks as though they are entirely alone in paradise. The small guest list for this lovely destination wedding only enhances its intimate appeal.  Thank you to Anna Kim Photography for sharing this with us!
