Free weddings

Some hotel chains offer ‘free’ weddings if you stay for a certain number of nights, or bring a certain number of guests – this is especially common in the Caribbean. If you have more than 15 guests staying at a hotel, you may qualify as a group and receive a free room or other discount – just ask the resort or your tour operator when you make the booking.

Choose out of season

Consider getting married out of season. If you exchange vows between November and March, prices are lower in the northern hemisphere, and you can still have an amazing wedding, (one exception to this is in ski resorts, where it’s high season).

Ditch tradition

There is no ‘etiquette’ for weddings abroad, if you can’t, or don’t want to pay for your close family to join you, then don’t. Although, this may mean that some will be able to attend your wedding day.

Watch online

However, you can always use a video streaming service to stream your wedding live to the UK, so your friends and family can watch, even if they aren’t with you.

Cut back

Pare down your ceremony – a wedding on a public beach with a BBQ reception will cost less than a 5-star chateau with a sit-down meal.

Book the holiday first

You can always book a holiday to your preferred location first, then contact a wedding planner separately to arrange the ceremony. That way, the ceremony will be the only added expense to your honeymoon.

DIY albums

Most photographers will now send you your photos via a website, where you can download just the ones you want. Then you can print them off and create your own album at home, rather than paying the photographer to create one for you.

Avoid translation costs

Choose a country where the paperwork is easy and you won’t incur translation or solicitor costs, so stick to English-speaking countries, or ones where English is an official language.
