Wedding dress shopping – even as a bride to be this phrase made me giggle inside, maybe it was the surreal thought that I was picking out the most beautiful dress that I was ever going to wear paired with the fact that I was so inexperienced at this whole wedding planning thing that it was funny. Shopping for my own wedding dress was awesome but also a tad strange. Even after I started pinning all of my favorite dresses, designers, styles and cuts, being reminded that I really was picking out my wedding dress made me feel giddy and anxious. Every wedding dress shopping experience is unique but I still felt there were some pressures to do it “right.”
I enjoyed shopping for my wedding dress, I really did! I will admit thought that I had a tainted idea of what wedding dress shopping would be like. I was apprehensive about the big foo-foo dresses and tiaras, crazy high price tags, sashes, emotional Say Yes to the Dress moments with all eyes on me — things unfamiliar to me.
My first stop was a quaint bridal boutique near Denver where my mom and maid of honor offered their support as I began perusing the endless numbers of gowns. Somewhere in the midst of grabbing handfuls of tulle and lace off the rack, I found the dress I would wear on my big day although I did not know it at the time. It wasn’t extraordinarily unique or extravagant, it was simple but it was perfect. And, like a great new song or album, it took me a while to really warm up to it. I thought that it could be the one but that thought had crossed my mind for a number of dresses. I almost felt bad for not being completely sure right away. I wanted to weigh my options. How was I supposed to not fall for every beautiful dress that I tried on?
Many parts of the dress buying process I had anticipated (the smiles, excitement, the veil, the jaw dropping and complete awe of all things shiny and sparkly) but there were some parts of picking out a wedding dress that I was not expecting. I was not expecting to leave the bridal shop that day with my mind playing tug-of-war, should I buy the dress or not buy the dress? Is it the one or the fact that I’m asking if it’s the one means it isn’t? It felt like I was more uncertain walking out of the store than walking in.
After trying on another two dozen dresses and sleeping on it for almost a week I made the decision to go back in to the original wedding dress shop I had visited. I tried the dress on again and felt much more comfortable making a decision the second time around. When I finally made my decision I was certain. I didn’t have the “say yes” moment that some girls dream of but looking back I’m glad I took a different approach, people I loved had shared their opinions but ultimately it was up to me. It was no less exciting for me and I didn’t absolutely love my dress any less than the girl who knew her dress the moment she saw herself in the mirror. I learned that it really is okay to not have a “say yes” moment in front of a audience. I missed out on a couple claps and cheers but there was plenty of that on the wedding day.
The pressures of having a revelatory moment can cause unnecessary stress and strain on something that should be enjoyable and exciting. Don’t feel like you are not choosing the right dress if you don’t walk out of the dressing room and immediately want to ring the bell. Take your time deciding and ruling out other options. There are so many drop dead gorgeous wedding dresses – how the heck are we supposed to pick only one in a single moment? There are dozens of right ones. If you put it on and you can’t stop smiling that’s a good sign, but unless you are strapped for time why not keep looking? Be smart and enjoy this time in the wedding planning process!

Peak wedding season may be coming to an end in the UK, but couples looking to get married this autumn might be wise to get hitched in Hawaii, tie the knot in Thailand or ring the wedding bells in Bali, especially if they’re tying to save the pennies…
New research from foreign exchange experts, Currencies Direct, reveals that the average wedding abroad now costs around £7,000, including the ceremony, photography, overseas reception and a honeymoon stay – this compares to the average £21,000 cost of a wedding in the UK.
Of the most popular destinations for overseas weddings, South Africa – with the opportunity to get hitched on Table Mountain or even in a game reserve – offers the best value with the British pound up 35% against their local currency. Just behind is the home of the barefoot beach weddings, Bali, followed by sunny Australia, Thailand and Mauritius.

Where could be more romantic for your first holiday as husband and wife than the birthplace of the goddess of love herself? Richard Jones explored Cyprus, the short-haul honeymoon hotspot…
Just a few miles inland from the legendary Aphrodite’s Rock near Latchi, western Cyprus, lies Paradisos Hills. Co-owner Soulla Charalambous and her family built their 15-room (with another 12 rooms on their way) boutique hotel in memory of their father Andreas near the village of Lysos, the home of his wife Theodosia.
Paradisos Hills is a kind of retreat with its breathtaking mountainside location providing stunning views of Chrysochou Nay, Paphos Forest and the Akamas Peninsula all amidst a romantic atmosphere of peace and tranquility. Also, thanks to the warm, welcoming nature of Soulla and her clan, honeymooners or wedding parties will feel like they have been invited to stay over at the luxury home of an extended Cypriot family.
Throughout the week, there is a lot going on at the hotel, and considering Paradisos Hills’ relatively small size and constant calm at the place, each day there seems slightly different! Varying cuisine is served each evening in the restaurant, with Soulla and her sister Niki also running cookery classes involving mouthwatering Cypriot and Mediterranean dishes. Hikers and cyclists regularly call in for a bit to eat or a glass of wine, and to share a tale of two, with Niki’s Sunday lunch and Friday night Indian buffet being particularly popular!
Paradisos Hills is fully equipped to host a range of functions, including wedding ceremonies and receptions. The entire hotel is available for hire to groups large or small, perfect for accommodating any wedding guests.
If you’re one of those people who believes that when you’re abroad, you should do as the locals do, then Paradisos Hills ticks that box too. You’re able to have beautiful and friendly days out and about around the island, and the hotel is just a 15-minute drive south of Polis, and 40 minutes from Paphos meaning you can easily explore the largest island in the Med on your honeymoon.
Of course, public transport is available in Cyprus, but unfortunately, as with many Mediterranean destinations, not the most reliable! Therefore, the best way to get around is renting a car. Driving around the island is pretty relaxed and straightforward and, as most road conventions and markings are exactly the same as the UK’s, it will seem like a doddle to British motorists.
Most UK visitors to western Cyprus spend their time lapping up the warm sunshine and swimming in the sparkling blue sea at the beaches of Latchi, Coral Bay and Pomos, as well as days out in Paphos, too. Romantica is the ideal place for a spot of lunch or early evening meal that serves absolutely delicious dishes within a stone’s throw away from the municipal beach.
You can’t talk about Cyprus without mentioning the climate, and wedding and honeymoons are popular all year round on this sun-kissed island. April and May are very pleasant, being not too different from a summer’s day in the UK. July and August are the months to go for when you’re a couple who like it hot! Although there aren’t any guarantees, you can be almost certain that a summer ceremony in Cyprus will have lots of sunshine and no sign of rain!
With all the sun, it’s probably a good idea to find somewhere to cool off. Another half an hour or so down the road from Paphos is the city of Limassol, and just on the outskirts is the famous Fasouri Watermani waterpark – a great way to cool down after a hot day, we think! Here, couples can lounge around on the sunbeds or try out the lazy river, whilst any young ones you might have with you can enjoy splashing around in the kids’ pool.
If a waterpark doesn’t float your boat, then you could always go for a swim in the sparkling Med near Aphrodite’s Rock – who knows, you might just end up being blessed with eternal beauty.
Boutique, family-run hotel Paradisos Hills in Lysos, Western Cyprus, offers rooms on a bed and breakfast basis from just 60 Euros per night in 2014. Currently the hotel has a special offer whereby guests who stay for one week, will receive one night free. For accommodation, wedding and event enquiries, contact Soulla at info@paradisoshills.com.
Leading leisure airline Jet2.com offers friendly low fares, great flight times, and a generous 22kg baggage allowance to Paphos Airport from many UK airports. Flights start from £75 one way including taxes. For more information, visit www.jet2.com
Petrides Rentals in Polis provided car hire for the Akamas region. For enquiries, just visit http://ift.tt/133AnUV

Little White Dress Bridal Shop is a place where they love what they do and work really hard to provide an excellent wedding dress shopping experience, as well as, amazing designers to choose from. They work with designers who are not only wonderful people but who also are extremely talented and create beautiful gowns. Having the chance to sit down with owner, Cate Malone, it is clear that she totally understands what a special time this is for every bride and that Little White Dress is here to help!
Where do you start?
We really love making a great first impression here and love presenting a welcoming and friendly environment. We bring the bride and her guests to her area and we all sit down together.
Then, we say, so tell me about your wedding. We really pride ourselves in making a connection with our brides and knowing all the little details about her and the day that she’s been dreaming about. A lot of brides have been planning their wedding for a really long time so they have a lot of ideas, thoughts and opinions – and then other brides, they haven’t done that at all and this is brand new for them and are kind of unsure what’s ahead of them.
This is a great opportunity to educate the bride of all the different styles of wedding gowns there are so we usually suggest that she try on a variety of styles so that she can see herself in different necklines and different fabrics. We just want her to feel comfortable and see what she feels most beautiful in.
What sets Little White Dress apart from other bridal shops?
I think it’s our friendly and welcoming environment. It’s a very helpful and educational environment. We spend a lot of time with our brides learning about them, their style, their personality and their wedding. We also educate them a lot on the different designers, styles and fabrics so that they can make the best possible decision about the different options that are available to them.
Do you have a favorite designer?
We just got two new Jenny Packham gowns in the other day and I am in love, they are amazing! I just adore Claire Pettibone, she’s just genius and her new collection is brilliant as always. Matthew Christopher and Liancarlo.. it’s just too hard to narrow it down!
Do you have any advice for the bride on her wedding day?
The advice that I just gave my daughter on her wedding day and the advice that I give every bride is to just remember to take a moment whenever you can throughout the day to just look around you and take it all in. Really experience and be present for that moment and everything that is going on so that you can enjoy it and remember it.
